What plays

Press play. The count-in is one bar of clicks, then it loops until you stop it.

Record your two bars

Press record. You hear the count-in and my two bars, then the gap is yours: play on a MIDI keyboard or tap the keys above. It stops by itself after your two bars.

No MIDI keyboard? Tap the keys above while you record.

The four rules

1Same tempo. The clock never stops.
2Answer in two bars. No more.
3Come back to bar 1 when you’re done.
4Any note is allowed. So is silence.

What makes the two bars tick

Melody

D G F♯ G: a few notes, close together.

Rhythm

Hits on 1, 2e, 3, 4. One off-beat makes it move.

Harmony

G/B → B♭. Only the bass moves, B → B♭, a half step down. The top stays.

Form

Two bars that ask a question and wait. Your two bars answer it.

Can’t think of anything? Play one note on beat 1 of bar 3 and hold it. That is an answer.

A wrong note played twice is a choice.

If you can still play it tomorrow morning without looking at anything, it’s yours.

Metronome

On its own, no piano. Uses the tempo above.
